Many see the STL Renaissance Fair as eccentric performances, colorful cloaks and the sweet smell of turkey legs. Though upon exiting this magical festival, many leave with more than a full belly and hiccups of laughter.
“What I like most is how inclusive it is- and how everybody feels welcome, accepted and less judged,” Stephanie Johnson, staff member at the STL Ren fair said.
The Ren fair has provided this community for over two decades. Starting in 1999, The fair has homed a rich culture, buried in the woodlands of Wentzville, Missouri. Whether it’s the endless options of snacks, pirates dancing on tables, the countless costumes, or the colorful flags and bells hung above- it’s been a place many know they can return to.
“All the cool activities here for everybody, pretty much why we keep coming back, even for the kids,” Ren fair attendee, Brianna Walker said.
This is Walker and her son’s second year attending.
“Bring your walking shoes and plenty of money,” Brealyn Walker said. “Because there’s way too many cool things, and you’re going to want to buy them all.”
The festival is filled with shops, offering endless amounts of different clothing pieces, crafts, swords, anything one could imagine.
“We have lots of felt made toys, hand puppets as well,” Johnson said. “They’re all very durable for your pets and your people.”
Johnson has an extensive past in the world of arts, from starring in a movie alongside Ben Affleck to working with the New Yorker, however now she has found herself returning to this magical event.
Though the fair has a lot more than just felt animals, furry paws and swift tails are a common sight at the fair, it’s guaranteed you will see some kind of animal horsing around.
“Freya is a veteran, that’s for sure,” Sienna DeSouza said. “I think she’s been doing this for four or five years.”
Freya is more than just a returning companion, she’s one of the fair’s horses, providing rides and hands-on experiences to the bustling groups walking by.
“Definitely come say hi to the horses,” DeSouza said. “Come ride if you want to, she [Freya] also loves getting pets, loves getting attention.”
