On Thursday, Feb 19, DECA held its annual volleyball tournament for a chance to win a $10 DECA Cookie gift card. With a total of five teams playing this year, teams played back-to-back in a round robin tournament. Teams consisted of at least three girls and three boys on each team, with each team being required to rotate after each point. Teams also had to dress up in a theme.
“I think [the tournament] went pretty well,” senior Caleb Couch said. “There weren’t as many teams as I would have liked, but it was still very fun. There was some really good competition.”
In previous years, the DECA volleyball tournament has had a big turnout, but unfortunately, this year, there weren’t as many teams.
“This year we made almost nothing because we only had five teams this year,” DECA sponsor Mike Freedline said. “Last year, we had 10. So by the time we charged for teams, we had given prizes for each one. It almost cancels itself out.”
DECA uses the money from the tournament to help pay for hotels for state, which is this March. Even though there weren’t as many teams, students and teachers both had fun.
“Even though we had the numbers this year every team they got to play a lot more games,” Freedline said. “After the round robin we played a playoff afterwards. It was pretty good. We had one teacher team and four student teams.”
