In the hopes of promoting student learning while maintaining accountability, the math department has adjusted its retake policy.
“For all of my classes, kids are allowed to retake,” math department head Stacey Bevill said. “But the policy will depend on the class. For my AP Statistics class, there is a retake policy of two per semester, whereas my Algebra One class might have a little more lenience, as it sometimes requires a little bit of re-teaching and re-assessing.”
Setting a limit became necessary for the higher-level courses after some students began relying too heavily on test retakes.
“Students would always work on the previous chapter rather than focusing on the next chapter because they would bank on their retake,” Bevill said. “It turns into this vicious cycle that students get into.”
Senior Sammy Shi mostly agrees with this new policy.
“The majority of students who take test retakes use them for their intended purposes, and actually learn more in the process,” Shi said. “While I don’t necessarily think they should be limited for everyone, I do think this will prevent people from taking advantage of them.”
