The successor to the popular Nintendo 3DS game Tomodachi Life comes out this April, and is being well received by fans of the first game and newcomers alike. The charm of Tomodachi Life comes from its inherent chaos and the weirdness of the Mii characters that you make yourself to put in the game. The romance feature in the games combined with players making Miis of anybody from their friends and family to fictional characters and even their original characters makes for an unforgettable gameplay experience.
“I liked the retro vibe of [the original],” sophomore Cait Cantrell said. “Also, you can make literally anybody you want. You could make Michael Jackson marry, I don’t know, a duck.”
“Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream” adds much more customization to the creation of the Mii characters without it feeling too overwhelming. It expanded the range of skin tones to include unnatural colors, added the ability to have partially dyed hair, and even let the player choose the Mii’s dating preferences during creation. A new feature is also being introduced that lets the player assign little character traits to individual Miis, like speaking patterns and small fidgets that really bring the characters to life.
“I’ve always thought that [the Mii making system] was… it’s in-depth enough to be fun, but also vague enough to have an air of uniqueness to it,” sophomore Jade Taylor said.
The game takes place on an idyllic island instead of the town that was the setting of the previous game, and is allowing for crazy-looking custom buildings so the player can make their island match any aesthetic they want. The custom buildings operate much like “Animal Crossing: New Horizon’s” custom designs feature.
“I didn’t expect them to add custom buildings,” Cantrell said. “I feel like they’re giving it more of an Animal Crossing vibe, which, I don’t know how I feel about that but it was really creative and I’m glad they’re kind of expanding on that.”
