FHN athletics have struggled with student participation over the last handful of years. Only a select few teams have been able to produce a team at each level, some years only having enough athletes to make a varsity team.
This season, the girls soccer program was able to roster three teams, having a C-Team for the first time in years.
Underclassmen are eager to make their mark as they begin their high school careers, contributing to the continued growth of the program.
“I’m excited to be a part of the program, and I’ll just keep encouraging people to join even when I move on from C-Team,” freshman Evie Peck said.
Aside from growing numbers, younger classmen are thrilled to experience being on a high school team and what that entails.
“I’m looking forward to hanging out with the girls and team bonding, it’s a good group,” Brookleyn Ellis said.
Watching the program develop has been bittersweet for senior Morgan Smith, who has been on the team all four years of her high school career.
“We had around 54 girls try out this year,” Smith said. “So just knowing that we had so many girls that are so interested in our program, coming from freshman year, where we had maybe 30 girls try out. I think it just shows that we have such a building program coming along.”
As the team consistently funnels through players, the goal of keeping the program blooming remains.
“ I think that we’ve built a great foundation here,” Smith said. I think that the girls that we have as our underclassmen, and even our juniors next year, know how this program works and know what makes this program successful.”
