Varsity Boys Swim Recap Against FZN

The boys swim team has experienced recent success in their adventures as a small and majority underclassman team. On Sept. 26, the team faced FZN and won their first meet of the season, 90-84.

“Swimming is a numbers sport. That means if your team is bigger, you win,” sophomore swimmer, Danny Helvey said. “They had the same number of members as us, and it truly came down to hard work and grit.”

The win for the team was a turning point for this year, demonstrating what they have accomplished thus far. Powering through difficulties such as a small team, and many injured members, the team persevered and won many of their events. Even grabbing high point spots such as their first, second and third placements in events like the 200 free.

“I believe that we won simply because we all put in a hundred and ten percent effort,” freshman swimmer, Chris Wood said. “We all tried as hard as we could, and focused on some fast swims, and it paid off.”

This meet served as a large morale boost for the team this year, being their first win since the 2011-2012 season, and an indicator of large improvement. Individually, members such as Zac Fletcher consistently dropped another 2 seconds in his 100 breast, bringing him down to a 1:22.86.

“I am very excited and very proud the team team. As far as what it says – it sounds cliche – but everyone had to do their part in order to win the meet and they did,” head coach, Steve Kelly said.
