As the tryouts began on Feb. 25, 68 girls started to show off their skills on the field in order to earn a spot on one of the three soccer teams. The spots will be chosen by returning coaches Mark Olwig, Larry Scheller, Zach Fettig, and Brady Demling.
“I’m expecting to see a lot of competition between the girls at tryouts,” Scheller, who is the assistant Varsity coach, said.
Between the three teams, there will be a total of 55 athletes in the program. This means that around 13 girls will have to be cut from the team, but even with this pressure, many of the girls have prepared themselves for tryouts.
“I’ve been training with my club team MO Rush a lot in the off season,” sophomore Allison Weyhrich said. “So I hope it pays off for tryouts.”
With tryouts coming to a close at the end of this week, the teams will go right into practicing in order to get ready for their upcoming games. The first games take place in a little less than a month. The first Varsity game will be held on Mar. 19 at St. Dominic.
“I’m hoping we get better in all aspects and, of course, we score more goals,” Scheller said. “But most importantly, we just need more consistency.”
Last season, Varsity won their Districts game to move on to Sectionals where they were defeated by Pattonville. The team plans to try to make it just as far this year, if not farther.
“I think this season is going to go pretty well,” senior Katie Martin said. “We have a lot of tough competition, but we have a lot of great players coming out.”
