On April 30, the varsity baseball team traveled to Francis Howell Central to play the Spartans for the second straight day. Coming off a loss on Tuesday at North, the Knights were looking for a win.
Cole Donaldson hit a leadoff triple to start the game, but after three straight out, Donaldson was not able to come home. North’s starting pitcher Jake Cornett allowed 5 first inning runs. FHN then went down 1-2-3 in the top of the 2nd inning. After four consecutive Spartan batters reached base, Cornett was pulled to bring Nik Meyers in for relief. Meyers struck out the first batter he faced, but then gave up a bases clearing triple. The score was 0-9 after two innings played. The Knights came back for a huge inning in the top of the 3rd inning. Nine FHN batters reached base, scoring eight runs. In the bottom half of the inning, a 4-6-3 double play kept the Spartans off the board. The Knights picked up right where they left off in the top of the 4th. Dalton Scaggs hit a single with the bases loaded to time the game at 9. The very next batter, Andy Hickerson, broke the tie with a 2 RBI single. Once the inning was through, FHN was on top by the score of 13-9. In the bottom of the 5th, FHC was threatening again to score, but Andrew Curran made a jumping catch on a high throw from Dave Prost to tag out an attempted base stealer. In the bottom of the 7th, Andrew Curran made two plays to seal the victory for North. The first play, Curran fielded a grounder at shortstop and caught the FHC runner in a rundown, in which he was eventually tagged out. In the last play of the game, Curran made a diving stop for a grounder going into centerfield, and threw out the runner at first.
“We made a lot of adjustments, we took it one at bat at a time, and didn’t try to do too much. We strung together some hits and put up some runs,” Said Andrew Curran
