On Wednesday April 8, the Howell North tennis team will face Fort Zumwalt West at
home. This will be a challenge for a team that hasn’t had many this year. The team is currently 5-0 this season. In four out of the five games the team has only lost one point. The exception being against where they won 5-1 against FHC, before it started raining.
“Our teams been doing really well considering we’re undefeated,” junior Regit Sikka said.
Fort Zumwalt West however, is also undefeated so far this season. However, they have not been as dominant as the Knights this year, with no shutouts so far this year. The Knights work very hard to achieve this dominance of other teams. They practice for hours everyday after school. Even if it’s raining they still condition indoors.
“Everyday we practice by conditioning and doing lots of drill to improve our game,” Sikka said.
This hard work and commitment is especially evident in varsity number one, Matt Dunn. Dunn trains year round at the Miller Tennis Academy to improve on his skills. The extra training has obviously paid off considering he has been to state three years in a row. Dunn will be playing for the the University of Nebraska – Omaha next year.
“Our star Matt Dunn has been teaching us a lot as well as doing really well in matches,” Sikka said.
This success will not end when Dunn leaves. Four out of the six varsity gold players are juniors that will compete again next year. Also, all of the varsity silver team will be staying for at least another year, not to mention the 20 plus on the JV team.
Right now the team is focusing on the Jaguars of Fort Zumwalt West and keeping a perfect record.
