On Nov. 19, Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) met in the loft area in the commons at FHN. This was the third meeting of the general assembly. The club meets every two weeks and gives the members information and opportunities to volunteer and earn points, such as designing the club’s t-shirt for two points and a free shirt. The designs were submitted to Bailey Marek on Nov. 12. On the day of submission, the cabinet members held a meeting where they decided which design would be featured on the shirt.

“In our cabinet meeting, we took all the designs and the cabinet decided which would be the best or most appropriate design to represent us, and they went with it,” club sponsor Matthew Riffee said.

At the meeting, members placed orders for the HOSA T-shirts. The design is a combination of two submissions from seniors Delaney Chapman and Rachel Elder. The front consists of a heart with a medical symbol and HOSA written over it, and the back has HOSA written in different medical tools and the quote “It’s in our blood.” The front design was created by Chapman and the back was created by Elder.

“When I was thinking of a T-shirt design, I was thinking about what HOSA is all about,” Chapman said. “I came up with the quote ‘it’s in our blood’ because blood is health-related and HOSA becomes a part of you. We’re like a giant family.”

Near the end of the meeting, members met with their committees. There are four committees: blood drive, polar bear plunge, hygiene drive, and adopt a family. The committees plan the events and are opportunities for the general assembly to earn points. In each committee, there is one cabinet member to lead it. General assembly members volunteer to be a part of the committee.

“Basically, they are the decision makers for our events,” Riffee said. “ They pick things like themes and how to raise funds, when things are going to be held, the decision making. It’s kind of like divide and conquer.”

Fundraising for the upcoming competition was also discussed. The competition will take place on Mar. 28 and 29, where members will compete in a variety of events against HOSA members from other schools. These events will include team competitions, administering first aid, health quizzes, and many others. The general assembly will have a chance to sign up for the competition at the next meeting, which will be held after Thanksgiving break.

“The next meeting, we are going to figure out what category the members will be competing in,” HOSA President senior Anna Livingstone said.
