The Francis Howell North Esports Team was first started in 2019, making it only around five years old. Definitely one of the newest additions to our club and sports scene. It is part of an organization called MOSEF which stands for Missouri Scholastic Esports Federation which specializes in supporting the growth and providing resources for schools who across the nation are becoming more involved with competitive gaming.
North’s Esports team is doing a variety of things to get ready for the season. First they have practices pretty often, right now on Tuesdays from 2:30 to 4:00pm, but as the season goes on they will switch to both Tuesday and Thursday with competitions on Mondays and other times throughout the week. They work on games such as Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Rocket League, Apex legends and many more. The coaches Zach Goodsell and principal Brett Bevill are amazing with checking in on the team and teaching them many important skills, such as aiming, map placement and strategies.
“They help support us by making sure that there’s no foul play, or if there’s a problem going on in the Esports room, they are immediately there to step In for whatever happens” Isaihs Salas, a junior on the team said.”
Both coaches help out a lot in competitions too as it is their responsibility to keep track of who wins each event, they record the conclusion on a match sheet then put it onto the team records and whatever members with the best ones get to go to state. The team has very high hopes for their chances of getting into bigger tournaments, highlighting the rocket league team which Mr Goodsell believes has the potential to make it.
All in all even while being one of the lesser known school organizations, they have so many great opportunities to experience.“Esports is awesome because there’s some students that may not have interest in traditional sports that before Esports couldn’t be a part of a team,” Goodsell said. “but with Esports, they’re able to find friends and become teammates to someone else and get that, camaraderie, and that bonding.
