Journalism Courses Offered at FHN

There are seven journalism/communications related courses offered at FHN. The introductory courses are Journalism, Journalism: Broadcast Writing and Production, and Digital Photojournalism. It is highly recommended to take one of those three courses before applying to get on staff. The Journalism and Broadcast Journalism courses each count as 1/2 Comm Arts credit toward the 4 you need for graduation. Aside from those three courses, Newspaper Production, Yearbook Production, Honors Newspaper Production and Honors Yearbook Production are offered. You can read about each of the courses below.

NEW FOR 2022-23 – DUAL CREDIT OFFERED FOR PRODUCTION COURSES THROUGH UMSL
Students on the publication staffs will have the opportunity to earn Dual Credit through the University of Missouri – St. Louis. For students who have completed a prerequisite and are enrolled in Newspaper Production, Yearbook Production, Newspaper Production Honors or Yearbook Production Honors, they will have the ability to earn college credit through UMSL. Staffers can earn credit for Introduction to News Writing and Introduction to Mass Media. Editors can earn credit for Interpersonal Communication I. Journalism –  Credit: ½ credit Comm Arts Prerequisite: none The student will explore all aspects of newspaper, magazines and yearbooks and/or broadcast and emergent media while they write, interview edit, design and apply media law and ethics. This class counts as 1/2 Comm Arts credit. Pair it with Broadcast Journalism and you could have your fourth year of Comm Arts credit taken care of before you are a senior. Due to the fact that this course is the foundation course for the publication courses, this course is recommended before taking Newspaper Production, Yearbook Production, Newspaper Production Honors or Yearbook Production Honors.

Broadcast Journalism –  Credit: ½ credit Comm Arts — Prerequisite: none — The student will explore all aspects of broadcast journalism from writing and editing to filming with DSLRs and mobile devices. This class counts as 1/2 Comm Arts credit. Pair it with a course with Journalism and you could have your fourth year of  Comm Arts credit taken care of before you are a senior. Due to the fact that this course is the foundation course for the publication courses, this course is recommended before taking Newspaper Production, Yearbook Production, Newspaper Production Honors or Yearbook Production Honors.

Digital PhotoJournalism – Credit: ½ credit of Practical Arts or Elective Credit Prerequisite: Prerequisite: Open to grades, 9-12. Students will explore all aspects of visual journalism using 35mm cameras, digital video cameras and computers. Topics covered will include visual composition, operation of equipment, computer editing programs and media law and ethics. Assignments will be geared toward publication in one of the school publications. Successful completion of this course meets the recommended prerequisite for Newspaper Production, Yearbook Production, Newspaper Production Honors or Yearbook Production Honors.

Newspaper Production – Credit: 1 unit of Practical Art or Elective Credit Prerequisite: Journalism, Broadcast Journalism and Production, Digital Photojournalism and/or Teacher Recommendation This class will be responsible for the production of the school newspaper. Students will be trained and work in the following areas: writing, photography, design, business and emerging media. This is a co-curricular course.

Yearbook Production – Credit: 1 unit of Practical Art or Elective Credit Prerequisite: Journalism, Broadcast Journalism and Production, Digital Photojournalism and/or Teacher Recommendation This class will be responsible for the production of the school yearbook. Students will be trained and work in the following areas: writing, photography, design, business and emerging media. This is a co-curricular course.

Newspaper Production Honors – Credit: 1 Unit of Practical Art or Elective Credit Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation (Journalism, Broadcast Journalism and Production, or Digital Photojournalism highly encouraged) This class will be responsible for the production of the school newspaper. Students will be trained and work in the following areas: writing, photography, design, business and emerging media. This is a co-curricular course. This course is designed for the student who wishes to take a more rigorous approach to the study of advanced Newspaper Production. In addition to normal production duties, students will complete an additional project each semester for the honors credit. Working with the teacher, the student will design and implement this independent project, which in addition to hours outside of class to research, will require a presentation. Yearbook Production Honors – Credit: 1 Unit of Practical Art or Elective Credit Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation (Journalism, Broadcast Journalism and Production, or Digital Photojournalism highly encouraged) This class will be responsible for the production of the school yearbook. Students will be trained and work in the following areas: writing, photography, business, design and emerging media. This is a co-curricular course. This course is designed for the student who wishes to take a more rigorous approach to the study of advanced Yearbook Production.
